Lillian Frideres Wins Outstanding Asian-American History Prize, Is Finalist at National Contest
Nevada Middle School student Lillian Frideres won a special prize for her website project and was named a finalist in her category at the National History Day Awards Ceremony held online June 18.
Frideres received the Outstanding Asian-American History prize for her individual website “Vietnamese Refugees in Iowa: Ray’s Humanitarian and Controversial Relocation.” The cash prize is funded by the National Park Service. More than 100 students from across the country were awarded cash prizes of between $500 and $2,000 each, for superior work in specific judging categories.
Frideres’ project was also chosen as one of ten national finalists in her junior individual website category from among 92 national entries. Her website is available at https://site.nhd.org/50798339/home.
The National History Day Contest includes more than 3,000 participants from across the United States and globally, with over 400 historians and education professionals serving as judges for the students’ work. In addition to the National Park Service, NHD sponsors include HISTORY®, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Southwest Airlines, the Crown Family Foundation, The Better Angels Society, the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library.
