NMS student Lillian Frideres qualified for the National History Day competition, and five other NMS students were named finalists at the State History Day contest, held at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines on April 25.
Frideres’ individual website is titled “Vietnamese Refugees in Iowa: Ray’s Humanitarian and Controversial Relocation.” Focusing on this year’s NHD theme of “Debate and Diplomacy,” Frideres researched the historical context, story, and impact of the Vietnamese refugees who came to Iowa during the 1970s with the help of Governor Robert Ray. Her primary source research includes transcripts, documents, letters, newspaper articles, and speeches. She also interviewed refugees, her grandparents who sponsored 27 refugees, and Ambassador Kenneth Quinn who served as Governor Ray’s assistant. Only two projects from each of the nine NHD categories are selected at the State level to advance to the National competition.
Two other NMS groups also received recognition at the State Contest. Emilee Kelly and Nicole Wittrig were among six project finalists for their group exhibit “Title IX: Breaking Barriers within Gender Discrimination in Sports.” In addition, Kole Beving, Cash Handsaker, and Drake Hinson were among six project finalists for their group website, “The South Side Scandal: Baseball’s Greatest Debate.”
